The Power of Candles in Meditation

In collaboration with @sarabranilovic from Croatia, we bring you an immersive guide to enhancing your meditation practice with the power of scented candles.

Meditation is a powerful practice that can help you find inner peace, reduce stress, and improve your overall well-being. Incorporating scented candles into your meditation routine can enhance the experience by engaging your sense of smell and creating a calming atmosphere. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the process of meditating with scented candles to help you achieve a deeper state of relaxation and mindfulness.

Step 1: Choose the Right Scented Candle for meditation

Selecting the perfect scented candle for your meditation is crucial. Different scents can evoke different emotions and responses, so choosing one that aligns with your desired meditation experience is essential. For example, lavender is known for its calming properties, while eucalyptus can help with mental clarity. Experiment with various scents to find the one that resonates most with you.

Step 2: Prepare Your Meditation Space

Creating a serene and comfortable environment is essential for successful meditation. Find a quiet, clutter-free space where you can sit comfortably on the floor or in a chair. Ensure that the room is well-ventilated and at a comfortable temperature. Place your scented candle in a safe holder on a stable surface, within your line of sight but not too close to your body.

Step 3: Light The Candle

Before you begin your meditation, take a moment to light your scented candle. As you strike the match or flick the lighter, focus on your intention for the meditation session. Watch the flame come to life and allow the scent to fill the room gently.

Step 4: Embrace Comfort in Mind and Body

Find a comfortable position, either cross-legged on the floor or seated in a chair with your feet flat. Keep your back straight yet relaxed, and gently rest your hands on your knees or lap. Close your eyes or maintain a soft gaze on the candle flame.

Step 5: Breathe in Serenity, Exhale Stress

Begin your meditation by focusing on your breath. Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose, then exhale slowly through your mouth. As you inhale, notice the scent of the candle and allow it to fill your senses. As you exhale, imagine any stress or tension leaving your body.

Step 6: Engage Your Senses and Let Go

As you continue to breathe, allow the scent of the candle to guide your meditation. Focus on the aroma and how it makes you feel. Observe any thoughts or emotions that arise, gently releasing them and returning your attention to the scent and your breath.

Step 7: Gratitude and Closure

When you feel ready to end your meditation, take a few more deep breaths, savouring the scent of the candle. Gently awaken your body, wiggling your fingers and toes, and slowly open your eyes. Take a moment to express gratitude for the experience and the calming influence of the scented candle.

Final Thoughts

Meditating with scented candles can be a transformative experience, helping you to achieve a deeper state of relaxation and mindfulness. By following these steps and incorporating the power of scent into your meditation practice, you can enhance your overall well-being and find a greater sense of inner peace.

Happy meditating!
